What is a community fridge?

Community fridges are organized by volunteers to serve all community members. Massachusetts rates of food insecurity run at standard 15% and in many places 20% of the population is food insecure. While there are food pantries and free dinner spots, the need is basically unlimited and a community fridge can help bridge days without food or money for food for individuals and families.

How does it work?

A small team of volunteers works locally to find donations. If you are interested in being a one-time or regular volunteer either donating or helping to find one or ongoing donations, please reach out!

There are always short and longer-term ways to volunteer:
  • One-time donation
  • Regular donations (daily, weekly, monthly)
  • Spreading the word amongst your neighbors and friends
  • Talking to businesses to see if they would donate food or money one time or regularly
  • Driving to pick up bulk food when it becomes available regionally
  • Keeping an eye on the fridge for food unfit for consumption, light cleaning, and reporting of any structural or mechanical issues
